Oribi Gorge Wild Swing Guide

Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve sits 21 kilometres inland from Port Shepstone, off the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast's R612. The area is best known for its natural beauty and thrilling adventures. At the top of Lehr’s Waterfall, you can experience the world's highest gorge swing, operated by Wild 5 Adventures. The whole reserve is overseen by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, which endorses the conservation and protection of this natural area.

Where it is and who runs it

Oribi Gorge is readily accessible, sitting about 30 minutes inland by car from Port Shepstone. If you are heading there from Margate, take the R61 to Port Shepstone, then turn onto the R612 and drive towards Paddock. From Durban, take the N2 south to Port Shepstone, then head inland on the R612.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife manages the reserve, ensuring the conservation of flora and fauna. The reserve is open all year, and you can access it in a regular sedan. Gate hours are 06:00 to 18:00 in summer and 06:00 to 17:00 in winter.

What to expect on the drive

From Durban, the N2 route takes about two hours to reach Oribi Gorge. Expect a mostly smooth road through the farmlands to reach the R612 turn-out around Port Shepstone. Holding those times in mind, an early start will give you a full day in the gorge.

The route from Margate is more direct, about 30 minutes to turn inland once you're cleared of the coastal stretch. The route passes through Port Shepstone, so you have an opportunity to stock on supplies. Take a quick look around before heading inland.
