Comrades Up vs Down Run

Thinking about running the Comrades Marathon? Wondering whether to aim for an Up Run or a Down Run? These aren't just marketing labels—the route direction makes a big difference. So, what's involved, and how do you pick the right year for your personal record? Let’s break it down.
The Basics: Up Is One Direction, Down Is the Other
The Comrades Marathon alternates its starting and ending points each year. For an Up Run, it’s from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. For a Down Run, the race runs the other way, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
Why The Two Races Feel Different
The route profile is the big difference. The Up Run has cut-off checkpoints to help you preview pacing. The halfway point, Drummond, is at 43.0 km, and the Cato Ridge checkpoint is 56.9 km. Don't expect to hold back or you'll get dropped.
Those big numbers mean the Down Run feels faster — but it's easier to get injured on those hills. By then, your legs are heavy. The comedown feels brutal, even for a fast finish, and can send you off the road.
Qualifying and Official Results: What To Know
Running an Up Run or a Down Run both require qualifying.
Remember, turning up on race day doesn’t mean you’re entry-qualified to run. All those qualifying events must be official, published, and fit the time limits. You're compared against your own performance in these events. Cutoff points are firm, even at the finish line.
When entering an Up Run or Down Run, confirm your qualifications, study the current year's course information, and train for the actual distances. That’s how you'll set your best personal score, whether you're going for the Gold or just looking to finish.
