Margate vs Uvongo vs Ramsgate

Margate, Uvongo and Ramsgate are like siblings in a seaside family: they have more in common than some might realise, but they still have their differences, especially when it comes to the vibe. Choosing between them rests on two choices: activity versus quiet, and bustle versus balance. Margate is the resort-holiday base, Uvongo provides a touch of nature just north of the activity, and Ramsgate is the closest thing to a quiet destination on the KZN South Coast.

Margate: the KZN holiday centre
Margate is the spine of the South Coast. It’s KwaZulu-Natal's prime resort: a town that hosts more visitors than residents over the holiday seasons.
But it’s also the natural holiday choice for simple convenience: tourists are going to be most comfortable with a string of beachfront eateries, cocktail bars and music venues, not to mention safari bookings, estuary cruises and forest hikes to arrange. Many main South Coast beaches are along the R620 that connects Margate, Uvongo and Ramsgate, but Margate itself hosts some 16% of tourism accommodation.
Uvongo: naturescape with a waterfall
Uvongo is Margate’s neighbour and cousin: different in feel, but only a four-kilometre drive.
Uvongo still has a dining district and self catering options, but per municipal data, 9% of tourism accommodation rests in this town.
Ramsgate: the village on the South Coast
Ramsgate is next on the map, a 4km drive, and it’s the closest thing the South Coast has to quiet.
The Bilanhlolo River mouth is the lifeline.
Choosing the right town
The South Coast can be a mixed holiday destination, both residential and outdoor. But understanding the differences between Margate, Uvongo and Ramsgate can help you avoid getting surprised by how many estuary-cruises, bird-watching options and travel-sports there might be.
If you want to minimise driving, Ramsgate, Margate or Uvongo Beach is the way forward.
