Beginners can surf safely on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast by checking lifeguard guidance and local surf conditions before entering the water.

Choose a beach with clear lifeguard warnings and surf reports, and take lessons from a certified school. In the water, heed flag markers and remember not to swim outside safe zones.

Choose a Beginner-Friendly Beach

The KZN South Coast’s gently rolling swells and variety of beaches offer many beginner surfing options. But it’s crucial that your first session is safe and easy.

Before choosing a beach, verify that it is patrolled by a lifeguard service and check any beach warnings. Lifeguard guidance is not universal in the area, so your choice of beach will shape your safety.

Official KZN beach-safety guidance says a first visit should check the flag system, which marks out zones safe to swim in.

Get Safety Advice From a Surf School

If a beach has the lifeguard and flag guidance, boarding is certainly possible as a beginner if you pick up a few pointers from a surf school.

Surf schools are an alternative to picking up a board and paddling out with a friend. They leverage expert tips to help guide you in your first sessions, especially surf etiquette, watching for rip currents, and avoiding colliding with other surfers.

Certified instructors are hard to replace with fly-by-night rental and basic board rental is much more dangerous if a beginner does not know how to handle a board while they are paddling out to the surf zone. A surf school will be able to show the best way to bleed off wave energy, keep control of the board, and ensure you don't get sandbagged when the waves come tumbling in.

Many of KZN's South Coast surf schools are well run. On the Upper South Coast, Riptide Surf School at Scottburgh Beach is noted for offering beginner-to-advanced lessons and rentals.

Local instructors provide guidance and support to surfers.

Safety Tips to Remember in the Water

Whatever beach or school a South Coast beginner picks, several safety rules define safe surfing.

It is important to check the beach's surf reports and get the local runners' fix on conditions. KZN's beaches have a variety of swell conditions.

Be aware of tides and currents, and always swim and surf between the flag markers on patrolled beaches. Southbroom beach, and beaches around Port Shepstone, offer these markers and the lifeguard support.

End your surfing day on time, and don’t take risks if you’re too tired or unsure of the conditions. If you’re at Southbroom, consider visiting a local eatery for some well-earned fish and chips.

The South Coast's surf scales are good beginner practice, but it is essential to stay safe. Lifeguards, good schools, and taking a surf report will give beginner surfers the safest and best surfing experience right from the start.
