Pulitzer-Winning Newsrooms Quietly Promote Gambling Affiliates
14 October 2026
Across their online platforms, Pulitzer Prize-winning Advance Local network published over 17,000 promotional articles for sportsbooks, online casinos, and prediction markets since 2022. The content, often buried at the end of articles with product codes and promotional links, follows an expansion in gambling affiliate programs and private blog networks used to boost search rankings.
While the newsroom websites gained top rankings from the influx of articles, they also introduced readers to content that can lead to gambling addiction. As of 2024, the gambling content violates Google's policies. The tech giant is taking a hard look at sites publishing promotional content designed to boost page rankings.
Newsrooms Rely on Gambling Promotions for Revenue
Advance Local has tapped into a lucrative revenue stream. Gambling affiliate programs like those run by Catena Media offer publishers commissions based on customer sign-ups. But with those commissions comes a loss in credibility. According to a March 2024 press release, Catena Media published promotional content through Advance Local, driving customers to sportsbook and online platforms.
The high-commission model can lead to erosion of a newsroom's brand. Catena Media, publishers reported, often bills publishers based on player deposits or losing bets—essentially, a kickback system on negative player outcomes. In the absence of player protections, this structure can drive gambling addiction. Nearly 20 million Americans show signs of gambling addiction, according to NPR.
Expanding the Gambling Network
Since 2022, Advance Local outlets have expanded the scale and scope of gambling promotions. They now publish articles boosting online casinos, sportsbooks, and prediction sites, carrying referral codes and promotional links. While some readers may be keen on gambling, others are there for the news. The promotional material may steer a news-loving reader toward risky gambling behavior.
The first such promo articles surfaced in 2022; their numbers skyrocketed in 2024 as Advance Local launched online casino promotions. By 2024, as new betting sites proliferated, Advance expanded its network to include prediction platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket. The promotional content sometimes includes a small-print disclosure: that publishers may be compensated if readers sign up for accounts through partner links.

How Private Blog Networks Enable Gambling Sites
Private blog networks represent a key aspect of gambling SEO strategies. As industry reports indicate, Google’s site reputation abuse policy is now cracking down on site parasitism. Further, a Google spokesperson warned: "Publishing content at scale to boost search rankings is expressly forbidden." Investigators identified gaming and esport sites that Clickout Media acquired in 2023 and 2024–only to replace human writers with automated content at Sportslens.com and other properties.
Gambling operators and search engines are engaged in a cat-and-mouse game. After recent exposés, some sites still appear to have PBN links. But the overall boom in PBNs is prompted by a growing demand for backlinks on gambling domains. As reports indicate, PBMs largely operate as casino link farms–multiple links from "trusted" domains hosting gambling content can boost a site's ranking.
Google appears to be getting tough, yet publishers and affiliate networks continue expanding their gambling operations.
The Growing Gambling-Adjacent Media Sector
For years, newsrooms have relied on wire and content-sharing agreements. While publishers may share sports and current affairs content, none has ever relied on a content-fed arm dominated by promotions. Today, as gambling revenues grow, that's exactly what's happening. Gambling promotion recently entered the affiliate-media space. Advocate Media, another major affiliate, publishes across e-sport sites, pop culture blogs, tech aggregators, and mainstream news brands.
Priorities: More than customers’ personal safety or advertisers’ credibility, publishers are likely focused on one question: how to build new revenue streams.
